DEBORAH COFFY
National Organization For Women
I joined the National Organization for Women as the treasurer during the 2021 -2022 school year. In my position, I learned about financial management. Additionally, I was able to attend many mobilizations and rallies that dealt with the issues that impacted feminism, human rights, Reproductive Justice, and the LGBTQ+ community. I had the opportunity to go to Tallahassee to share my views with many other mobilizers, activists, and organizers who were against the oppression that the state legislature was pushing through, such as the 'Don't Say Gay' Bill, the 15-week abortion ban, and the Anti-Critical Race Theory.
By being part of NOW at UCF, I was able to help with the meetings we had every two weeks, as well as help with two significant events. One of them was our Influential Women in Politics panel, where we brought in local women involved in the local and national political scene. I also played a significant role in planning NOW UCF's Annual Take Back the Night, which focuses on domestic violence and sexual assault. For Take Back the Night, I recruited many of the speakers we had, and I was the emcee introducing the speakers who spoke about their personal experiences and the general effort against domestic violence and sexual assault.
