#ShestheChange Conference

In January 2022, I started my program fellow position at Ruth's List Florida. Ruth's List Florida seeks to elect pro-democratic and pro-choice women in state and local races in Florida. During my time, I worked alongside the former program director, Kay Mathers. I assisted with call time, text banking, and events such as the Galentine's Day Event for Ruth's List Central Florida, canvassing for endorsed candidates, and for the She's The Change Conference. At the She's The Change Conference, I contacted and connected candidates, politicians, and elected officials for a video shoot reflecting Ruth's List Florida's mission. Additionally, I recruited volunteers by connecting with the Political Science, Gender Studies, and Sociology departments at different universities in our state.

The She's the Change Conference brings those who are old and new supporters of Ruth's List's mission. 2022 was a crucial year in politics for Florida. Although the election results didn't reflect how the Democratic party or Ruth's List wanted it to go, abortion and reproductive justice still are winning issues in our country and our state.

So many women, from former Representative Val Demings, Former Commissioner of Agriculture, and current Florida Democratic Chair Nikki Fried to State Representative Anna Eskamani, provided much energy and hope.

Because of my program fellowship, I was invited to join the board for the Central Florida Ruth's List chapter. Once I graduate, I plan on increasing my time to help formulate ideas and help elect pro-democratic and pro-choice women in the Central Florida area. Ruth's List taught me the importance of comradery. Although it can feel lonely and hopeless in politics in a red state, it doesn't mean we should give up and not fight for progressive values that uplift Floridians.
