From January to August 2022, I participated in the Recovery Support Specialist Internship through Aspire Health Partners and UCF. Through this internship, I was able to interact with clients who had co-occurring disorders. It allowed me to know more about the perspectives of those who face mental illness and substance use disorder. I worked 10+ hours a week with clients and staff at the Clubhouse, where I helped in the three units: culinary, the clothes closet, and the tech room. This totaled 160 hours for on-site time, with additional supervision and training on Wednesdays.

During my second semester in the program, I worked with the residential portion of College Place, which allowed me to learn more about the on-site clients and services outside of the Clubhouse. I also learned about medication management and tracking appointments, medications, and room checks. Additionally, I went on store runs, doctor appointments, and meetings that assisted in one's journey with addiction.Â

This internship taught me that so much more needs to be done regarding mental health services and accessibility. I will never forget this experience as I continue my journey in mental heath advocacy.Â
